A History of Our Possessions

We put Indian bedspreads

over our sofas and to hide

the crack in the walls, we

hung up Indian tablecloths.

We had photographs and

push pins, one drawing

of a horse in pastels, on vellum.

We had phones with long

curled cords that could reach

almost where we needed

them. We lugged wooden

desks from used office supply

in whose drawers we kept

the drafts, the letters, and

we rolled wooden spools

from construction sites

on which we put our beer

cans and dinner plates. Milk

crates held the records,

and the turntable needed

a place, and too, the speakers,

and if you left the wooden

desk behind, and the spool,

and the chair that you found

on the street, it all fit, so

you could drive away

carrying it all as proof of

how little you needed, how

self-possessed you were,

but for the unconvincing shell

of the mattress, tied with a

slight wobble, on the roof.
